AAC Peer Coaching Group

This group is for you if…

  • you are new to learning about AAC (alternative and augmentative communication) and are looking for a learning community

  • you support an AAC communicator in an educational or community based program

  • you are a paraeducator, special educator, classroom teacher, SLP, OT, PT, social worker, case manager, day support staff, etc.

  • you support any kind of AAC communicators - those with more emergent or more advanced communication skills, those who are part-time and/or full-time AAC communicators, and those who are multimodal communicators who may speak and/or sign.

Each month, group participants will…

have an opportunity to share about something that’s got them feeling stumped, curious, excited, confused, frustrated, optimistic, or looking for support, information or a place to problem solve. If you’ve got questions about how to incorporate AAC into literacy or math learning, bring ‘em to the group. If you’ve got a new-to-you student who uses AAC and you’re feeling overwhelmed about where to start, let’s figure it out together. If you’ve got some AAC experience but you’re feeling stuck or struggling to engage your student, crowdsource for some creative ideas from people who can relate.

Hang on. There’s MORE.

As if all of that wasn’t amazing enough, this group prioritizes neurodiversity affirming practices that recognize AAC communicators as whole people, with unique regulation, sensory, emotional and educational needs who desire connection with themselves and others that works for them and supports them to be who they want to be. If you want to learn more about how to shift your philosophies, practices and language to more fully reflect the needs and desires of neurodivergent individuals, this is the place for you.

All group participants will also have access to a shared google doc of resources related to any topics that are discussed in the group.

  • FAQ:

  • Why isn’t the group just for SLPs? All of us can benefit from learning how to show up as the best possible communication partner for the AAC communicators that we teach and support. I had initially planned to focus on working with SLPs but I changed my mind because there are already too many silos of specialization and knowledge within educational settings. This creates barriers to communication and leads to some people feeling unsure of how to teach people who use AAC or even afraid of interacting with AAC communicators. It also reinforces the gatekeeping of knowledge and the idea that only SLPs can learn how to be communication partners and that only SLPs are responsible for supporting an AAC communicator’s language development. We need to get better at talking and working with each other to support collective growth.

  • Will this group help me convince the rest of my team that we need to do things differently? That’s a great question…that I can’t answer. What I can tell you is that learning how to effectively advocate for your students regarding AAC is something that takes practice. Sometimes it means sharing research or resources about AAC - that’s something you’ll get from this group. Sometimes it means learning how to talk about AAC in ways that feel clear and accessible to other people - that’s also something you’ll get from this group. Sometimes it means hearing other people’s experiences so that you feel confident in knowing you’re not alone - definitely something you’ll get from this group.

  • My student doesn’t really “like” their AAC system so they never use it. How will this group change that? This group is a space to share about your experiences and learn what YOU might be able to do differently. The group is not about getting your student to “like” their AAC system or “do” anything. It’s about you examining what you believe. It’s about you learning about how to create the optimal environment for your student to become the autonomous communicator that they are entitled to be.

  • Why won’t the group be recorded so I can watch it later? For a couple of reasons. First, it’s too much work for me. I’m open to doing it in the future but not just yet. Second, I hope this group is a space where people will feel comfortable sharing about possibly uncomfortable things without worrying about what they sound like and who will see it. Lastly, I hope the people who show up are active participants in co-creating the space and that’s hard to do if you’re watching it after the fact.

  • I am looking for more individualized coaching, is this group for me? Maybe, maybe not. If groups aren’t where it’s at for you, check out my one on one options. If you’re fine with a group model, you’re already familiar with AAC and/or you want more in depth coaching around a specific student or your own AAC knowledge and practice, then check out the group coaching I offer with Danielle Kent through VT-AAC.
